Chief Title IX Officer - Mary Gower

 

Mary Gower was appointed Chief Title IX Officer in February 2017. As Chief Title IX Officer, Gower will oversee efforts to comply with and carry out the System’s responsibilities under Title IX, including the System’s responses to all complaints involving possible sex discrimination.  Gower will project manage all aspects of implementation of the University’s Voluntary Resolution Agreement entered into with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights on February 2017.

​​Mary Gower joined the University of Alaska staff in 1997 at the UAF Community & Technical College. Since then, she has ​worked in progressively responsible student-centric positions, including teaching business and management courses ​for six years as UAF ​adjunct​ faculty.​  ​

Gower’s perspective reflects her diverse work background - her work in​ Alaska and in ​the lower ’48 included healthcare, ​corporate, small business, and ​education positions. Gower earned her Bachelor of Business Administration/Human Resource Management in 1994, and her Master of Business Administration in 1995.

In her most recent position as the Director of Enrollment Strategy for the university system, Gower managed multiple student-focused projects, working in collaboration with her campus colleagues. This included the implementation of HAVEN training for sexual assault prevention, ​and also the university's student information system compliance with the 2016 US Department of Education and US Department of Justice guidance for an inclusive environment.
