Creating a page

Page titles

Pages are created using the "New" button in the main toolbar tab. Before clicking it you need to navigate to the place in the site which will become the parent page for your new page.

When clicking "New" you will be asked to provide a title for the new page:

At this point you can type the title as you would like it to appear, complete with upper- and lowercase letters, spaces etc. The text you enter here will be stored in the page's metadata where it can be changed at any time later on; it will also normally be shown in the page header and navigation menus.

More importantly, the title is also used for assigning a name to the new directory where this page will be located. This means the name will become a part of the page's URL. Since there are a number of restrictions regarding how URLs are created you may later see that the name has been transformed to ensure it's part of a valid URL. In particular, the following changes are applied:

  • Conversion to lowercase.

All characters will be transformed into their lowercase equivalents.

  • Replacing of spaces.

Spaces and other invalid characters will be converted to underscore ("_") charaters. Sequences of multiple underscores are also removed.

  • Break-up of Unicode characters.

Characters which cannot be represented in the ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) character set will be split into its Unicode building blocks if possible. For example, ä is converted into a.

  • Appending of counter value to get unique name.

If the computed directory name already exists, Roxen CMS will append a number to ensure the resulting URL is unique.

You can preview and modify the suggested directory name before the page is created. To do this, click the "+" icon on the right side of the title input field. The toolbar is then expanded to display a second text field:

The directory name is updated in real time as you modify the page title. Note that if you change the second text field by entering a custom directory name, any subsequent change to first field (the page title) will generate an automatic directory name again.

In most cases you now only need to click the "Create Page" button to complete the process. The web browser will display a blank new page (or a page with some predefined content) and you can continue the editing process as described in the next section, Editing a page.

Stationeries

In some instances, the creators of the web site has configured the page creation process to involve selection of a page stationery. This can even be true for some areas of a site and not for others.

A stationery is nothing more than a pre-built page that holds some content (and metadata) that will be inserted into all newly created pages. For example, the standard stationery in Roxen CMS sites contains a page header and page footer component.

If more than one stationery has been defined for a particular section of the site, you will be asked to pick which one you want to use when a new page is created:
