Why does this form have CAPTCHA?

CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart. CAPTCHA images are put on forms that are submitted outside of the University intranet. Automated spamming programs cannot translate the image into letters and numbers and fail to fill out that field. Since the field is required the form is not submitted and only human submitted data is entered in the data collection area.
