If you have tried to dial an 800 number that begins with 1-800-315- and found the number denied in the UAF Telephone system, this workaround will enable you to make you conference call.

The Procedure to use if you are denied access to your 800 conference number is:

1. UAF users participating in State Of Alaska agency GCI bridged audio conferences dial the toll free GCI audio reservation line at 1-800-770-2121 and provide the reservation operators the pass code provided for the audio conference.
2. GCI reservation operators will then call the UAF user back and place them into the audio conference.
3. GCI then bills the appropriate State of Alaska agency for the costs of the audio conference.

Telephone Services was forced to disallow the original number, while some issues with charges placed against conference callers are worked out. The problem has been that when you make a call to the conference number 1-800-315-xxx, and put in your pass code, all charges for the conference call are sent to the general UAF account rather than to the agency setting up the conference calls.The work around procedure prevents this.

This interim procedure was worked out to allow you to make your conference calls. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Traditionally all numbers at UAF were in the 474 exchange. As campus has grown, we have added numbers in the 455 and 450 range. By doing this, we have retained the ability to dial only 4 digits to reach every telephone served by the campus telephone system.

This guide should help you decide if a number you are trying to dial is within the extended campus 4-digit dialing plan.

The following numbers are within the extended campus 4-digit dialing plan. If dialing one of these numbers, remember that when dialing from a campus extension you need only dial the last 4 digits of these phone numbers:

• If the number begins with 474 and the next digits are 11, 15, 18, 19, 24, 26,27, 5, 6, or 7
• If the number begins with 450 and the next digit is 8
• If the number begins with 455 and the next digits are 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 28 or 29
• If the number begins with 455 and the next digit is 3

OIT has upgraded the University voice mail system in 2011. This is part of phase I of the campus-wide infrastructure and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) upgrade project designed to upgrade the UAF network infrastructure, replace the outdated telephone switch, and merge voice and data traffic into one simplified core network.

With the upgrade there are no changes to how you access your voice mail compared to the previous system. However, with the new service come new features and a new menu system. For more information read the following publications:

• The old telephone switch must be upgraded (to reduce risk) as it is on an expired service contract.
• New standard technology is VoIP (merged Voice & Data); however analog will be maintained where needed.
• VoIP allows for more efficient network management; there is one less network to refresh if voice & data run on same core.
• UAF is in desperate need of infrastructure upgrades to core network; these upgrades can take place at the same time.
• In order to capture competitive research dollars, recruit students, and provide effective technologies the network must be upgraded.
• The State of Alaska, UAA, and UAS have already upgraded, increasing the efficiency and value of the upgrade to UAF.

• The multi-year project is campus wide including all Fairbanks locations with the exception of residence halls, some leased spaces, and community campuses which may be included in a later phase/project.
• The UAF Core will be upgraded first and redundancy built in (via new Fiber Ring between lower campus and west ridge).
• New core backups will also be installed.
• New voice mail; call center functions; and message/safety notification options will be available.

OIT is partnered with UAF Facilities Services and World Wide Technologies (WWT) to move this project forward over its life; and with Facilities in the future for regular lifecycle upgrades. WWT has completed similar projects for the State of Alaska, UAA and UAS in recent years.

• The kickoff of Phase 1 was February 8th with all campus stakeholders identified at this time.
• Expect to see OIT and WWT working in Duckering/AHRB this spring or doing closet inventories alongside Facilities as work is completed in buildings for DM needs.

• OIT is actively engaged with UAF and SW leadership to find a way to cover these costs.
• Recharge rates will increase at a manageable rate over time; rates will be available in April for appropriate budget planning.
• This project is a high priority for a portion of any funds received from the State in FY12 for deferred maintenance.
