Phishing Alert | Email Subject: "Upgrade Alert" | 15 Jan 2014


OIT has been receiving notices of a phishing email making it's way into people inboxes.  The email reports the user's account is over quota, and needs to be updated to expand the quota.


If you have received this message in your Google Apps @ UA email account, you can report the message as a phishing attempt using Google's Report Phishing tool.

If you received this message in any other email account, please delete the message.

The email asks the recipient to follow a link, asks the user to login to a replica UAF page.

DO NOT reply to this email or login with the form.  If you did, you should immediately change your password using ELMO.

Phishing Indications

Here are a few of the things to look for when identifying this message as phishing:

  • The email address is not a University of Alaska address.
  • The URL (link) leads to a Google Form asking for passwords. Never submit passwords though a Google Form.
  • The email reports the user's email quota has been exceeded. You can check this claim by scrolling to the bottom of the email message and checking your account quota in the bottom left.

Always be cautious when emails or websites asking for personal information or passwords.
