Microsoft Office 2007 Deployment FAQ

Answers

Q: I don't have the advertisement for Microsoft Office 2007. Why?

A: This could be for several reasons:

  1. You don't have Configuration Manager installed. To see if you have it installed, please view the Config Manager section of our troubleshooting video If Configuration Manager is not available, please call the OIT Support Center, x8300, to submit a ticket to get Configuration Manager installed.
  2. Your computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements. There are several minimum requirements for installing Microsoft Office 2007.
    1. At least 256 Meg's of RAM
    2. At least 5 GB free space on C Drive
    3. At least Windows XP Installed
    4. Has Microsoft Office 2003 already installed
If you don't meet any one of these requirements, the advertisement for Microsoft Office 2007 will not be advertised to you. You will need to contact the OIT Support Center, x8300, to submit a ticket to have Microsoft Office manually installed.

Q: What does OIT Desktop Support Recommend for a successful install?

A: To help ensure that your upgrade process goes as smoothly as possible, please follow the following recommendations:

  1. Start the download part around noon. This should allow ample time for the download part to complete.
  2. After the download completes, REBOOT your computer. This will make sure any Microsoft Office programs that were running in the background are closed.
  3. After the reboot, make sure outlook, or any other Microsoft Office product didn't start automatically, and close them if they did.
  4. Start the install around 4:30 pm. Since the install takes a long time, you can start it, and it will continue after you leave work for the day. It is important that you do not interrupt the installation part. So instead of logging out of the computer when you leave, choose to lock it instead. Press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys all at once and click the "Lock Computer" button. The next morning, you will (unlock) login to the computer and will be prompted to reboot the computer, please do so. Once your computer has rebooted and you log in, you will have the Microsoft Office 2007 applications installed.

Q: How do I import my existing mail into Outlook 2007 after the install?

A: This is largely an automated process. After you've gone through the installation process, rebooted and have opened Outlook 2007 for the first time, the program will attempt to upgrade you're existing .pst file to the new format. You will see a IMAP Search Folders Popup:

Please click the Checkbox "Please do not show me this dialog again" and click OK.

You will also see a Microsoft Office Outlook Box:

Please click "No" and proceed with the Outlook import. If the import is successful, and you want to enable instant search, then the next time the window shows up, you can click Yes, and install the component from Microsoft. If you have a lot of information in Outlook, then this part of the upgrade can take a long time. Please give the program some time to succeed.

Q: After the upgrade, I attempt to open outlook and get:
"Cannot start outlook, map132.dll is corrupt or the wrong version."

A: This happens when Microsoft Office 2003 did not get properly uninstalled. Please run the Office diagnostics located at Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Microsoft Office Diagnostics. Click "Continue" at the first window, then "Run Diagnostics." Diagnostics can take up to 30 minutes to run, so be patient. Once Diagnostics are complete, click "Continue." The diagnostics will take you to a website. You can close the website.

After diagnostics run, attempt to open up Outlook again. If the problem still persists, call the OIT Support Center, x8300, and open up a ticket.
