Banner is the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that UA uses for Human Resource, Financial Aid, Student and Finance processes. UA is currently on version 8. The upgrade to 9x modernizes Banner, delivering a new user interface (UI) and updates the technology used to develop administrative forms and self service tools.
By the end of December2018, the vendor for Banner is no longer making improvements to Banner version 8. UA has a limited amount of time to transition to Banner 9x before support and regulatory improvements are no longer offered from the vendor. 9x also reduces the need for major upgrades.
The UI for Banner 9x is web based meaning access to Banner will be device agnostic. Banner 9x is accessible from any workstation, tablet or smartphone. Chrome is now the preferred web browser and no longer needs a Java plug-in. Banner 9 also has an updated look and feel, providing easier, more intuitive searches.
9x pages function as they do in Banner 8. However, power users of Banner will need to learn new keyboard shortcuts and there will be a learning curve due to the new UI.
The only impact expected to occur to Banner 8 is the development freeze to Banner 8 INB forms. Banner 8 INB forms will need to be transformed by Ellucian in order to be present in Banner 9, so for now, no further changes to Banner 8 forms are able to be made unless regulatory in nature.
By the end of 2017, FinAid pages will be processed using Banner 9x. The user interface will change with regard to page design, but the pages themselves will function as they did before, will all “must have customizations” in place as they were in Banner version 8.
FinAid staff will first identify all custom and baseline forms used in daily business operations. Custom forms will be transformed by the vendor into 9x pages. FinAid staff will then need to test and/or validate baseline Banner pages, depending on usage. Custom Banner pages will need to be tested.
Additional activities around PopSelect, Job Submission, Workflow, Quickflow and security considerations may be required.
There will be no changes to Banner 8 data, RPTP, or TOAD because the underlying database for Banner 8 and Banner 9x are the same. This means all processes integrated with Banner also remain functional.
Will Banner 8 co-exist with Banner 9 during the transition?
Yes, the upgrade is broken into modules rolled out individually. This may be a point of frustration for some, as there will be a period where some areas are running older technology, while other areas are using newer technology. In time, all will be upgraded.
Are all Banner forms being replaced?
No, some will be completely new and offer different functionality. Others will be simply rolled into the new technology.
Are new skills required?
Yes, OIT-EAS will need to become familiar with new technologies and functional staff may need to be trained on new processing.
Will this require a restructure of Banner security?
At this point, we do not believe Banner 9x will require a complete Banner security restructure, but the upgrade may introduce unknown complexities requiring a change to security setup.
The student team will be able to complete the five test specifications due this week so that Ellucian can transform the 2nd batch of forms for UA.
Ellucian recently provided the dates they will deliver UA's four batches of transformed pages. The second batch of transformed pages will be delivered two weeks later than originally scheduled causing the timeline to be extended. Campus Registrars approved the change to this schedule.
The first batch of transformed pages is scheduled to be delivered on 2/1/18 triggering the 30-day testing time frame for student teams to test their 13 custom pages.
Risk- LRGP must be up and available at all times outside of the prescheduled monthly maintenance window or development work from Ellucian will be slowed.
Risk- The recent LRGP refresh caused Ellucian consultant accounts to stop working. In addition, other technical issues are currently impacting Ellucian's ability to access LRGP to conduct development work. This may impact Ellucian's ability to deliver the first batch of pages on time.
