Today UA networks were the target of a Denial of Service (DOS) attack from external entities. Initial troubleshooting and evaluation of the problem indicated there was a software issue with a firewall device, which was confirmed in conjunction with the firewall vendor's technical support team. However, upon further inspection and continued issues after the device was restarted, it became evident that there was a DOS attack in progress that was difficult to detect. The attack vector of the DOS was isolated and identified by the UA OIT network team, and security measures put into place to mitigate the issue. Once this action was taken, the firewall device was able to resume normal operation and service was restored to production applications.
