GRANTS AWARDED TO ALASKA PROGRAMS WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Alaska Congressional Delegation today announced that federal agencies have awarded a series of funding grants to Alaska groups and communities. The grants total more than $8.5 million.
National Fish & Wildlife Foundation· $10,000 to Girdwood Parks and Recreation for the Girdwood Valley Weed Management Area. The project will promote education and awareness of weeds through workshops, classroom sessions, and weed pulls.
National Science Foundation· $803,668 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) for the project entitled “IPY: Pan-Arctic Studies of the Coupled Tropospheric, Stratospheric and Mesospheric Circulation.” This project is under the direction of Richard Collins.
· $1,939,401 to the UAF project entitled “IPY: Collaborative Research on Carbon, Water, and Energy Balance of the Arctic Landscape at Flagship Observatories and in a Pan-Arctic Network,” which is directed by Marion Bret-Harte.
· $3,280,000 to UAF for the project entitled “The Dynamics of Change in Alaska's Boreal Forests: Resilience and Vulnerability in Response to Climate Warming,” which is under the direction of F. Stuart Chapin.
· $537,565 for the UAF project entitled “IPY: Collaborative Research: A Prototype Network for Measuring Arctic Winter Precipitation and Snowcover (Snow-Net).” This project is being directed by Douglas Kane.
U.S. Department of Transportation· $1,967,357 to the Alaska Railroad Corporation for the Anchorage International Airport Intermodal Facility. ###
