Meet the panel of participants

On May 7, 2008, Zolotukhin sat down with six experts from Fairbanks and Anchorage to discuss oil and gas development in Alaska. UAF’s Hajo Eicken moderated the discussion. UAA’s Sharman Haley joined UAF’s Falk Huettmann, Matthew Klick, Amy Lovecraft, and Amy Tidwell in the discussion.

Anatoly Zolotukhin.
Zolotukhin is currently the Deputy Chancellor for international affairs at Russian State Gubkin University of Oil and Gas in Moscow. Prior to February 2008, Dr. Zolotukhin was the technical director of Statoil Russia. A good portion of his professional career was spent in Norway where he worked as a professor at the University of Stavanger and consulted for companies in various aspects of petroleum reservoir and production engineering. Zolotukhin came to Fairbanks as a visiting scholar April 28 through May 8, 2008 to give public presentations and meet with faculty, students, and members of the community.

Hajo Eicken.
As part of the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2009, Eicken is part of an international group of scientists studying the seasonal Arctic ice zone. He is interested in how small-scale properties and the structure of sea ice impact processes on a larger scale, such as the role sea ice plays in the climate system. Eicken is a Professor of Geophysics at UAF and the Director of North by 2020.

Sharman Haley.
Haley’s research interests include understanding the socio-economic effects of large scale resource development on Arctic communities and rural development. Haley is a Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Anchorage's Institute of Social and Economic Research.

Falk Huettmann.
Huettmann specializes in Arctic seabirds, migration, populations, biodiversity and habitat questions. One of his research projects took him to the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East region to study bird migration for over 12 years. He is interested in how Alaska's natural resource development will impact avian wildlife, diseases, and landscapes. Huettmann is an Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology at UAF's Institute of Arctic Biology, Biology & Wildlife Department.

Matthew Klick.
Klick received a 2008 research grant from UAF’s Cooperative Institute for Arctic Research for a study entitled “Corporate social responsibility and community resilience: A case study of Norway's Snohvit gas complex.” He is currently a master’s student in Resource Economics at UAF.

Amy Lovecraft.
Lovecraft focuses on how to design locally-based, international institutions to manage natural resources and environmental conservation. Her research often examines the links between science, technology, and politics. Lovecraft is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UAF and the Associate Director of North by 2020.

Amy Tidwell.
Tidwell is a civil engineer that studies the effects of climate change on water resources in the Arctic. Tidwell is currently an International Polar Year postdoctoral fellow in the Water and Environment Research Center at UAF’s Institute of Northern Engineering.
