Offshore Oil and Gas
The Arctic coast at Barrow, Alaska. The Naval Arctic Research Lab (NARL), visible at left, is now owned by the Ukpeagvik Iņupiat Corporation (UIC) and was built to support oil and gas exploration in the National Petroleum Reserve following World War II. The seasonally ice-covered Chukchi and Beaufort Seas north of Barrow are now subject to substantial offshore oil and gas exploration, while at the same time supporting subsistence hunting activities by Iņupiat Eskimos. Coastal and offshore oil and gas development: Balancing competing interests through enhancing information and synthesis

Activities associated with oil and gas development in coastal and offshore settings are reflective of and impacted by the suite of major interconnected transformations that are underway in the North.  In the broadest sense this theme aims to help researchers, educators and students at the University of Alaska to develop networks and partnerships extending from the local to the global level with different stakeholders who are in need of information for planning and decision-making in the context of coastal and offshore oil and gas development. This project begins a process with the ultimate goal of translating such data and observations into information or knowledge that helps planners, stakeholders and the general public address the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities implicit in the change underway in the North.
