UAF Projects in the UArctic IPY Higher Education and Outreach Cluster

Adapting SENCER to the Arctic--Improving Polar Science Education as a Legacy

PI: Lawrence Duffy , Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry; Interim Dean, UAF Graduate School.

The goal of this project was the development of a new undergraduate course, "Environmental Radioactivity, Stewardship and People in the North," based on the SENCER model and its interdisciplinary, thematic approach, to be taught at UAF. The course was taught for the first time in Fall 2007 and its description is available here .

EarthSLOT: An Earth Science, Logistics and Outreach Terrainbase for the IPY

PI: Matt Nolan , Research Associate Professor, Water and Environmental Research Center, UAF.

This project involved the development of an IPY layer for the popular virtual globe program Google Earth , with many potential uses for researchers as well as the general public. The application is featured prominently on the international IPY site .

Monitoring Seasons Through Global Learning Communities Project ("Seasons & Biomes")

PI: Elena Sparrow, Research Professor of Soil Microbiology; Director of Education Outreach, International Arctic Research Center, UAF.

Seasons and Biomes is an international GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) education and research project involving K-12 teachers and their students to monitor the interannual variability of seasons in different biomes worldwide as part of climate change/environmental change studies.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Science and K-12 Education

PI: Ray Barnhardt, Professor of Cross-Cultural Studies; Director, Center for Cross-Cultural Studies, UAF.

This project involves the implementation of a new Indigenous Studies Ph.D. program at UAF which will also serve as the basis for forming an Indigenous Ph.D. Thematic Network under the new UArctic graduate division. The Ph.D. program has been submitted for review by UAF and is accompanied by three funding initiatives for graduate fellowships (one has been awarded, two are pending).

Resilience and Adaptation of Social-Ecological Systems: Global-Local Interactions in a Rapidly Changing North

PI: Gary Kofinas, Associate Professor of Resource Management; Director, Resilience and Adaptation Program, UAF.

The Resilience and Adaptation Program (RAP) at UAF trains graduate students at the Ph.D. and Masters levels to research social-ecological systems with an integrated approach. Students focus on issues of sustainability in a world of rapid change, examining local-to-global interactions. RAP offers fellowship support, and training and education through participation in a range of research activities of IPY. See the RAP program web site for additional information.
