Outreach Programs
A stranded harbor porpoise is necropsied as part of a demonstration at Mount Edgecumb High School in Sitka, Alaska as part of our Alaska INBRE and WhaleFest outreach efforts. Students get a hands-on tour of the inside anatomy, physiology and functions which allow a mammal to thrive in the marine environment. We emphasize adaptations and the importance of these animals as foods, sentinels for the health of the ocean, as well as the excitement of a career in the biomedical sciences.
Outreach Activities related to Biomedical Science and Research are led by Sue Hills. Dr. Hills has a broad background that includes being a high school teacher, university professor and a marine mammal researcher. [Studying walrus is one of her joys!]
