Outreach Programs

Student Support Programs

Student support includes outreach and recruitment, tutoring and mentoring, scholarships and tuition awards, internships and fellowships. Many of the programs listed below offer student assistance in one or more of these areas.

INBRE supports programs such as Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI) , Alaska Summer Research Academy ( ASRA ), Della Keats/U-DOC Sumemr enrichment program (UDOC) and Biomedical Partnership for the Research & Educational Pipeline (Alaska BioPREP ).  All of these programs have made a significant difference in the number of students interested in the sciences ( see some of our stories ).

Pipeline Model

As undergraduates, students can work in research laboratories at the University of Alaska (Anchorage and Fairbanks; soon to Juneau) where they may train and work with researchers, faculty, students and staff on a scientific project during the school year or in summer. As the students gain experience, opportunities are available for more independent research (see undergraduate Fellowship opportunities). These opportunities enrich the research experience and provide hands-on training and insight. Faculty submit proposals for funding on research projects and may include the students in their budget or students can apply for their own funding such as fellowships.
Once a student graduates, they have decisions to make regarding career choices: graduate school, medical, veterinary or other professional school, or working as a research technician in a research laboratory. Should the student continue on to graduate school at the University of Alaska, other opportunities for funding exist such as fellowships, teaching assistantships (TAs) and research assistantships (RAs).
