The University of Alaska Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of the Harold T. Caven Professorship. This professorship was established in 1974 with a gift from Mrs. Loretta Caven, widow of Harold T. Caven. Dr. Caven was a longtime Alaskan who first came to the state in 1943. He served as a Director and as a Vice President of First National Bank of Anchorage.

Proposals for the award will be accepted from faculty members in business and finance within the University system. Applicants who have evident leadership in the financial community, either practically or academically, are preferred.
|
Awards are intended to allow the recipient to carry out activities and projects designed to enhance the field of business and finance at the University of Alaska beyond those associated with the recipient’s normal faculty assignments. The successful candidate will be selected based upon 1) their academic accomplishments, attributes, qualifications and 2) the quality and degree of benefit to the University of the activities proposed to be carried out as a result of the appointment.

All proposals will be submitted to a selection committee comprised of qualified professionals who will select the top candidates whose proposals will then be forwarded to the President of the University for a final decision.

Deadline:
|
The deadline for receipt of complete proposals, including application, resume and letters of reference shall be November 9, 2009 for the two-year appointment. The term of the professorship commences upon award and will continue until June 2011. Any proposals postmarked after midnight of the deadline date will be returned unopened to the applicant.

Maximum Award Amount:
|
$10,000 each year for two consecutive years.
|
Submit the Following:

1. Complete application (see attached) with a description of the teaching, research and public service activities proposed to be carried out by the holder of the professorship during the term of the applicant.
|
2. A proposed budget for these activities
|
3. A proposed timeline for these activities
|
4. Resume
|
5. Three letters of reference describing the qualifications and suitability of the applicant for the professorship.
|
Criteria upon which the Proposal will be judged:
|
1. Application Criteria
|
A. Must be a teacher and scholar of high competence;
|
B. Must be held in esteem by his or her academic colleagues;
|
C. Must be qualified to hold the rank of professor or associate professor at the University of Alaska;
|
D. Must have demonstrated his or her concern for the values of life both in his or her scholarly work and in his or her broader participation in community affairs and in society;
|
E. Must be willing to exercise leadership in promoting a continuing interest in the life, works, and principles of Harold T. Caven in the university and community and in encouraging related studies where appropriate.
|
2. Professorship Activities Criteria
|
A. Degree to which the activities proposed will benefit students, faculty and the public in the areas of business and finance.
|
B. Degree to which the proposal makes effective and efficient use of the award funds.
|
Notification of Recipient:
|
The successful recipient will be notified of the President’s decision during the month of December 2009. The President’s decision on the merits of proposals is final.
