This form should be completed and submitted online.  You can also download a PDF file to submit, but submitting online is the preferred method. There may be processing delays if this application is not submitted electronically.

Step 1:
To receive consideration for need-based scholarships, you must submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 15 prior to the semester you plan to attend. FAFSA data is used to determine scholarship eligibility including financial need, number of dependents other than spouse, etc. These items are selection criteria for specific scholarships and an important part of your application.

Step 2:
Go to UAOnline to apply for admission to the UA Campus you plan to attend.

Step 3:
Apply for scholarships on UAOnline  to be automatically considered for all scholarships. Once logged in, choose Scholarships located in the Student Services menu; answer the required scholarship questions. The UAOnline portion of the scholarship application is required and you will not be considered for any scholarships if you have not completed it.

Step 4:
Return to this page and complete the form below for scholarships that require additional information not accessible via UAOnline.

Deadline for most scholarships are February 15, 2012 for Fall 2012-Spring 2013 scholarships. If received after this date we will hold on to the application until July 15, 2012, to be used for any additional scholarships that open up. Any applications received after the July date will be disqualified. Submitting an incomplete application or failing to adhere to the requirements will result in disqualification.

NOTE: Information provided on this form will be used by the UA Foundation for University related business only. This form resides on a secure server. Our secure server software (SSL) is the industry standard for secure transactions. This software encrypts all entered information so that it cannot be read as it travels through the Internet.


IMPORTANT NOTE: You will not be considered for scholarships unless you have also applied for admission to the appropriate undergraduate or graduate degree program at the UA Campus you plan to attend.   All selection criteria not requested on this form or through UAOnline (see step 1 above) will be obtained from your UA student record (e.g. academic major, class standing, etc.). You must be sure your UA student record is as complete and accurate as possible. A personal essay is a required part of the application (UAOnline; step 1). It is recommended that you compose your essay in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, then copy and paste it into the essay box.

Some scholarship sponsors require additional information to award their scholarships. To be considered for the scholarships below, please complete the appropriate additional requirements. (The space will expand but please keep to the requested number of words or less). The additional requirements should be received by the UA Foundation no later than February 15, 2012. Not all students will qualify for each of these, please note criteria for selection carefully before completing additional requirements.

Alaska McDonald’s Student Scholarship - minimum award $2,500
Applicant must be an incoming freshman student who has graduated from an Alaska high school. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated leadership potential and civic involvement. *Applicant must submit a list of school activities, honors, community involvement, and activities.

Mike Ardaw Scholarship - minimum award $1,000
Applicants must be full-time students and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Preference will be given to students studying the Sciences (including Nursing), Education or Engineering.  Preference will be given to students who have been Alaska residents for at least one year and are from the Nancy Lake area (Palmer, Wasilla, Big Lake).  *Applicants must submit a paragraph describing their connection to and love for the Nancy Lake area.

Lawrence Bayer Business Administration Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be full-time students attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) or University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Recipient must be a Business Administration major active in clubs and/or sports.  Preference is given to applicants with financial need.  *Applicants must submit a list of clubs and/or sports in which he/she is an active participant.

Charles E. Bunnell Scholarship - minimum award $1,000
Applicants must be full-time students entering his/her junior or senior year with a declared major in an accredited field and have a minimum GPA of 3.2.  Preference will be given to applicants who graduated from an Alaska high school and have lived in Alaska for 3 or more years. *Applicants must submit a paragraph describing how they emulate the ideals of persistence, vision, self-sacrifice, concern for others and love of the North embodied by Charles E. Bunnell, the first president of the University of Alaska. 

Ella Craig/NASW Alaska Chapter Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be full-time graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Social Work.  Preference will be given to students who are members of the National Association of Social Work Alaska Chapter (NASW) and who have an interest in working in the area of Geriatrics. *Applicants must submit a letter from NASW verifying membership AND a paragraph indicating his/her preferred interest area.

Richard C. & Minnie Crook Scholarship – minimum award $2,500
Applicant must be a student majoring in Biology, Biochemistry, Psychology, Chemistry, or ANSEP with the intent of pursuing a career in medicine, preferably as a medical doctor. Applicant must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0. *Applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from their advisor indicating their intention of following an academic plan which will support their application to Medical School.

Ed Earnhart Political Science Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be full-time students majoring in Political Science.  *Applicants must submit a paragraph verifying he/she is a registered Democrat and declaring what he/she has done in support of the Democratic Party, Democratic candidate(s), or Democratic Party platform support.

Excellence in Geographic Information Systems Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be full-time junior, senior, or graduate students in good academic standing with a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.88, or a major GPA of 3.2.  Applicants must have a declared interest in Geographic Information Systems or Mapping Science and be engaged during the award period in a directed or undirected project or class involving Geographic Information Systems.  *Applicants must submit a paragraph describing his/her involvement in a directed or undirected project and/or class involving Geographic Information System.

Patty Hamilton Early Childhood Development Scholarship - minimum award $2,500
Applicants must be an Alaska resident entering his/her junior or senior year and majoring in Early Childhood Development/Education.  Preference will be given to students who have prior experience working with or volunteering with young children.  *Applicants must submit a paragraph describing his/her experience working with or volunteering with young children.

Patricia Ann Hughes Eastaugh Memorial Teaching Scholarship - minimum award $8,000
Applicants must be first-time incoming freshman students enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program.  Applicants must intend to become an elementary or secondary school teacher in Alaska and be enrolled in academic programs leading towards those degrees.  Recipient must be an Alaska resident and a graduate of a public or private high school in Alaska.  Preference will be given to students who show a desire to teach and who are in the top 25% of their class. *Applicants must submit an additional statement of 1,000 words or less entitled “Why I Want to Become a Teacher of Children in Alaska.”  Candidates should also briefly express their opinion of Alaska’s educational system(s) and their thoughts on changes they would embrace therein.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration Scholarship - minimum award $1,000
Applicants must be incoming freshman students from the North Star Borough. Recipient must be active in community affairs and/or extra-curricular school activities who have demonstrated in their lives the principles for which Martin Luther King, Jr. stood. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.0. *Applicant must submit: 1) a short essay on why the applicant believes he/she is worthy of this scholarship, 2) a list of school activities, honors, community involvement and activities, 3) two letters of recommendation (not from relatives, mailed seperately).

Dr. Terry Moore Memorial Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be an active duty military spouse attending classes at Eielson or Fort Wainwright.  Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in a biology class. *Applicants must submit a copy of his/her military I.D. indicating his/her military sponsor or a letter from his/her spouse’s commanding officer naming the sponsor.

NACE International Alaska Section / BP Scholarship - minimum award $1,000
Applicants must be junior or senior in good academic standing majoring in Engineering. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.75. *Applicant must submit a 500-word essay (double spaced, 12 pt font) on the topic of “Your observations of corrosion around your home, neighborhood, or school and express your understanding of these impacts in terms of safety and cost to you and/or society in general.”

Practicum in Public Health Scholarship - minimum award $3,600
Applicant must be an Alaska resident enrolled in a Master of Public Health program. Alaska Native/American Indian students are preferred, however other students interested in pursuing a career related to tribal health will be considered. Applicant must be willing to commit a minimum of 240 hours in practicum over the course of a year. *Applicant must submit a resume and a letter of commitment to practicum signed by both applicant and mentor organization.

Regents’ Scholarship - minimum award $5,000
Applicants must be junior, senior or graduate students in good academic standing whose application reflects demonstrated commitment and involvement in leadership and civic or professional service activities and recognized academic achievement.  *Applicants must submit a listing of his/her demonstrated commitment and involvement in leadership and civic or professional service activities and recognized academic achievement.

Clair Shirey Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be music majors with a demonstrated interest or emphasis in classical/liturgical organ.  Preference will be given to students who are residents of the following geographic areas: Anchorage Archdiocese, Alaska and Pacific Northwest.  *Applicants must submit a paragraph describing his/her interest or emphasis in classical/liturgical organ.

Ted Stevens EADS Scholarship - minimum award $2,500
Applicant must be a dependent of current or former Alaska National Guard or United States Coast Guard members who is stationed in Alaska or was stationed in Alaska at the time of his or her discharge or death. *Applicant must submit a copy of his/her military I.D. or a letter from a former commanding officer naming the sponsor

William S. Wilson Memorial Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be full-time students majoring in Science who demonstrate research interest and/or evidence of research potential (i.e. research reports, publications, etc.)  Preference will be given to undergraduate students, but graduate students will be considered.  *Applicants must submit a paragraph describing his/her research interests and/or evidence of research potential.

Guy A. Woodings Scholarship - minimum award $500
Applicants must be majoring in Natural Resource Management with a 3.1 GPA and must have been enrolled for at least two years pursuing a four-year degree.  Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in Natural Resource Management with an emphasis on planning and land use. *Applicants must submit an essay discussing how they envision the growth and development of the state over the next five years and what part they envision themselves playing in that growth and development.

Final instructions

IMPORTANT REMINDER: To receive full consideration for need-based scholarships and other financial aid, you must submit a complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which must be received for processing at the U.S. Department of Education Central Processor by February 15 prior to the semester you plan to attend the University of Alaska.
