The Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference

EPSCoR provides travel support for attendees at the Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference (WAISC), an annual event held in rotating Western Alaska communities. WAISC seeks to bring together researchers and rural Alaskan residents to share observations and conclusions and to both coordinate and bolster research efforts in rural communities.

EPSCoR has provided travel funding for all five WAISCs, held in Dillingham in 2008 and 2012, Nome in 2009, Unalaska in 2010, and Bethel in 2011. In 2008-10, the conferences attracted a total of 439 participants and facilitated the presentation of 187 papers. Many Alaska EPSCOR students and faculty have attended the conferences and at least one member of the EPSCoR office staff has been in attendance at each one.
