Philip Ernst of Nome was one of eight original members of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines board of trustees. He was appointed to the board by Governor J. A. A. Strong. He served but one year and did not attend any board meetings.
He and his brother Joseph went to Dawson during the Klondike goldrush and worked at the printing trade. Later they moved to Nome where they established the Alaska Printing Company. They also engaged in gold dredging, their firm being known as the Ernst Alaska Dredging Company. Their father, A. B. Ernst, living in Seattle, was president of the dredging company, with Phil serving as secretary-treasurer and Joe as operating manager.
Phil was married and his wife's name was Clara A. Ernst.
He was a member of the Nome city council, 1907-09 and he was grand president of the Pioneers of Alaska in 1911. He was chairman of the Democratic divisional committee in Nome, 1916-17.
