John Conway 1959-1967
1905 -Born in Skagway; son of Martin and Rachel Conway; middle child - older sister Bessie and younger brother Martin
-Attended elementary school in Skagway. High school in Seattle
1927 -Graduate of University of Washington with a degree in Business Administration
1927-1933 -Returned to SKagway; served as postmaster 1930-1933 after replacing his father who passed away in January 1930
1930 -Married Gertrude McGrath in Juneau. Children were Charles, John, and Maribeth
1933-? -Moved to Sitka; built the Conway dock. Agency operator for Alaska Steamship Company, Union Oil Company, and other shipping companies over the years
-Established Conway Insurance Agency and participated in fish cannery operations
-Helpe found and served as president of First Bank of Sitka from 1938-1960, when it merged with National Bank of Alaska
1940-1942 -Mayor of Sitka
1942-1946 -Lieutenant Commander in US Navy; awared bronze stare medal for the Aleutian Islands campaign
1959-1967 -Member of the Board of Regents. Appointed by Governor Egan to succeed Heintzlmaan.
1950s -Member of the board of Trustees for Lakeside School for Boys in Seattle
1974 -Member of the Board of Directors at National Bank of Alaska. Member, Executive Commander, and President of Conway Corps in Sitka. Director of Sitka Cold Storage. Director of Alaska Pac. Assur. Co.
-Member of Rotary, Elks. Democrat. Catholic.
