Adult Dependent Coverage

Dependent Coverage

The extension of Dependent Coverage is one of the provisions in the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (PPACA) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (HCERA) that will become effective for University of Alaska faculty and staff on July 1, 2011.

During the next open enrollment period (April 15, 2011 to May 16, 2011) you will be able enroll adult dependents up to age 26

Until the new provision is in place, employees have the option to continue coverage for their dependents by selecting COBRA continuation coverage. Employees must notify their regional HR office within 60 days of the date their child no longer meets the eligibility criteria for UA provided health coverage and elect COBRA coverage within 60 days of the date they are notified of their right to do so. COBRA premiums must be paid retroactive to the date coverage ended.
